Between the CNS, mutual insurance companies, and fee supplements, dental care reimbursement in Luxembourg can seem complicated. At Rodde et Associés in Schifflange, we explain the essentials so you know exactly what you'll pay before starting your treatments.
How does it work in practice?
For routine care (consultation, cavity, scaling)
Since January 2025, it's simple: you only pay your out-of-pocket amount. We use PID (Deferred Immediate Payment). In practical terms, you only pay your portion at the office, and the CNS reimburses us directly for their portion. No need to advance the money and wait for reimbursement.
What you pay:
Children under 18: nothing or almost nothing (100% coverage)
Adults: approximately 12% of the rate after deducting an annual flat fee of €79.22
For crowns and bridges
It's different: you must advance the costs, then get reimbursed.
Here's how it actually works: The CNS reimburses 80% (or 100% if you have your annual check-ups) of a reference rate set at €363. This isn't 80% of the total price of your crown, but 80% of €363, which is approximately €290.
At Cabinet Rodde et Associés, we apply a fee supplement to this reference rate of approximately €500.
Concrete example for a crown:
Total price at the office: approximately €863
You pay: €863 at the time of treatment
The CNS reimburses you: approximately €290 (or €363 if you've had your check-ups)
Your out-of-pocket amount: approximately €573 (or €500 with check-ups)
If you have mutual insurance: it covers all or part of the €500 fee supplement
Important: to benefit from 100% reimbursement instead of 80%, you must have visited a dentist for a preventive check-up each year during the past two years.
Why have mutual insurance?
In Luxembourg, mutual insurance isn't really useful for routine care (the CNS already reimburses 88%). It becomes very useful for prosthetics (crowns, bridges) because it covers all or part of the fee supplement charged by the dentist. Without mutual insurance, you pay this supplement out of pocket.
In our crown example at €863:
Without mutual insurance: you pay approximately €573 out of pocket
With good mutual insurance: it can cover a large portion of the €500 fee supplement
Practical procedures
For routine care: Nothing to do! You pay your out-of-pocket amount, we take care of the rest with the CNS.
For crowns and bridges:
You pay the complete bill at the office
You send your original paid invoice along with the quote to the CNS
The CNS reimburses you their portion (approximately €290 or €363)
You then send the invoice to your mutual insurance company, which reimburses you according to your contract
You have 2 years to send your request to the CNS after payment.
Special cases
Dental implants: Not reimbursed by the CNS, except in cases of very specific rare diseases (agenesis of numerous teeth).
Periodontal treatments (gums): Well covered by the CNS according to a multi-phase treatment plan. Dr. Camille Rodde, specialized in Periodontology, provides these treatments at the office.
Scaling: Covered twice a year maximum.
Our commitment
We always clearly explain to you:

The fee supplement we charge

Frequently Asked Questions: Dental Care Reimbursement in Luxembourg
I'm an adult going to the dentist in Schifflange: how much will I be reimbursed?
For basic dental care (consultation, cavity treatment, scaling), you are reimbursed at 88% of conventional rates by the CNS, after deducting the annual flat fee of €79.22. Thanks to the PID that we've been using since January 2025, you only pay the remaining 12% directly at the office, without having to advance the costs.
What about for a child?
For a child under 18, most dental care is covered at 100% of conventional rates.
I need a crown: what's my responsibility?
For a crown, the CNS reimburses 80% (or 100% if you've had an annual check-up for the past two years) of a reference rate set at €363, which is approximately €290 or €363. We charge a fee supplement of approximately €500 on this reference rate. You will therefore need to advance all costs (approximately €863), then you'll be reimbursed by the CNS for their portion, and by your mutual insurance if you have one for the fee supplement.
Can the dentist charge more than the CNS rate?
Yes, for certain procedures marked "DSD" (fee supplement upon quote), the dentist can charge a fee supplement. We always inform you in advance of the total amount to be paid. This is particularly the case for prosthetics (crowns, bridges), where we charge a fee supplement of approximately €500 on the CNS reference rate.
Do I always have to advance the money and then be reimbursed?
Since January 2025, we use PID (Deferred Immediate Payment) for routine care: you only pay your out-of-pocket amount at the office. For prosthetics, however, you still need to advance the costs and then send your invoice to the CNS for reimbursement.
I'm a cross-border worker, does that change anything?
As long as you're affiliated with the CNS through your employment in Luxembourg, you benefit from reimbursements according to Luxembourg rules. Simply verify your affiliation and your insurance conditions.
Do certain treatments require authorization before starting?
Yes, certain procedures bear the mention APCM (mandatory prior authorization) or ACM (authorization) in the CNS nomenclature. This is particularly the case for crowns, certain complex periodontal treatments, and implants in exceptional cases. We guide you through these procedures.
Is gum treatment (periodontology) well reimbursed?
Yes, periodontal treatments are covered by the CNS according to a multi-phase treatment plan. Dr. Camille Rodde, specialized in Periodontology, provides these treatments at the office. Some phases require prior authorization, which we handle with you.
What's the purpose of dental mutual insurance in Luxembourg?
Mutual insurance supplements CNS reimbursement by covering all or part of the fee supplements charged by dentists, particularly on prosthetics. It can also cover the remaining 12% on routine care. It's particularly useful if you need crowns, bridges, or other prosthetics.
